Malaysia • Penang

It's finally our turn to go on a graduation trip. The last trip we went to Taiwan, and it was four years ago. Can't believe that it took us so long til our second trip together.

Arrival + New Lane Hawker Street

Penang and all the good food, here we come!

Heng Perng queuing for the char kway teow (MYR8), must try! It's really good!

And so our hungry tummies had us ordering a plate of char kway teow, oyster fried egg, rojak and satay, not pictured (MYR60 / 3 pax)

We stumbled upon a durian roadside stall and decided to give it a try. Durians are about the same price as Singapore. The taste wasn't marvellous, but value for money (MYR60 / 3 pax). Then we headed back to the hotel because of the food coma hehe.

Restoran Zim Sum + Georgetown Murals + Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol + Chew Jetty + Peranakan Museum + City Hall + Fort Cornwallis + Gurney Plaza + Gurney Drive Hawker Centre

We started our day with dim sum at Restoran Zim Sum! They have an interesting concept where we can choose the dim sum from the bamboo trays, from steamed items to fried items in the glass cabinets. The dim sum is not the best but choosing dim sum from bamboo trays is always fun!

And we ended up with a full table of dim sum, porridge and Chinese tea (MYR78 / 3 pax).

After our tummies are satisfied, we walked around Georgetown in search of the famous murals. Access to the murals is totally free, and most of them are within walking distance to each other!

Vintage letter boxes everywhere!

Hellooooo.

The famous children on the bicycle, a must-see in George town!

It's quite sad that a few murals have eroded due to weather conditions, like this Cat mural that used to be in bright orange has now faded to a pale beige and we can barely make out its stripes.

Hope that preservation work will be conducted soon to save this street art.

We agreed that this looks like a Taiwanese drama we watched when we were in secondary school, Love around the corner!

Kee Leng acting all pissed due to the hot weather. And we had this famous Penang teochew chendol (MYR5 / pax) that was just around the corner, loved it!

We had a lot of fun to pose with the murals, soooo interactive!

Since street murals are a big thing in Penang, we also found a secret place where graffiti artists can practise their art to their hearts' content! And we walked to Chew Jetty (Free admission) to see the boats and houses on stilts.

Looks like Uncle Heng Perng is tired from all the walking hehe.

Random signboards to mess with our already-poor sense of direction haha.

It gets really hot in the afternoon, thank god Heng Perng prepared an electric fan and I was lucky enough to enjoy it during our walk, wuuhuu!

Dapping with this mascot on the way to Peranakan Museum (MYR20 / entry)!

Many antique pieces like typewriters, old cameras, radios are on display around the museum. There's a lot to see and we spent almost two hours learning more about the Peranakan culture and architecture!

My first time stepping into a preserved Peranakan home and it's such an eye-opener. Every corner of this Peranakan museum is as detailed and intricate as their dresses.

I mean look at the art and colours of this fountain display!

More exploration around Penang and we took a cab to City Hall and Fort Cornwallis (MYR20 / entry). I think we had high expectations for this place, but we were quite disappointed that there's nothing much to see.

Plus the weather became much hotter by the shores at 4 pm, so we sought shelter at Gurney Mall and had dinner at Gurney Drive hawker centre! I am officially a fan of the hawker food here!

More exploring and street food before the sun sets! Kee Leng looks much happier here looking at his Mian Jiang Kueh (MYR3 / pax) being prepared haha.

The sun in Penang has been unforgiving to our skin, so we did some masks while we played Dai Dee in the hotel room. Nights out!

Chulia Street Wantan Mee + Penang Hill + Penang Road Famous Laksa +
Design Village Outlet Mall + Pesgrave Street Hawker Centre

Good morning Penang! Can't believe it's our last full day here and there is so much food that we have yet to try!

Everyone is happy with their Chulia Street wanton mee (MYR12 / pax), said to be the best in Penang! But I was happy with my Penang white coffee, love the aroma and creaminess in each cup!

Then we took a cab to the foot of Penang Hill and boarded a funicular railway to the peak (MYR30 / two-way)!

The view of Penang from the vantage point!

Mandatory "I've been here!" shots, I am glad to have awesome friends like you guys for the past 11 years!

We trekked around the hill and I was lazy to move.

We burnt so much calories from walking in the past few days, we treated ourselves to Assam laksa at Penang Road Famous Lake (MYR10 / pax). Laksa like finally!

Learning from our lesson that Penang gets really hot in the late afternoon, we went to Design Village outlet mall to avoid the heat and of course, outlet shopping (Own expenses)

There were some irresistible deals here, and I got myself a pair of limited edition beige Timberland boots for only MYR600! We were really lucky as well since it rained that day instead of the day when we were out exploring Georgetown.

Dinner back in Georgetown at Pesgrave Street hawker centre. Hawker food alldayerday! There are many stalls selling biscuits and dried goods along the street too.

Black Kettle Cafe + Wai Kee Char Siew + Kueh Nyonya Mong Deng Pheow

Our last day in Penang and we decided to reward ourselves with Eggs Benedict (MYR35 / pax) at Black Kettle after all the walking exercises! Our first thought? Extremely value for money because Eggs Benedict can easily cost more than MYR60 in Singapore, and it's almost half price here!

I am a hungry monster.

We walked around the north of Georgetown in search of more weekend fairs but the one we headed for was permanently closed. But we managed to stumble upon Wai Kee which was open for the day!

For the past few days, we wanted to try this famous char siew and roasted pork rice and it was always closed when we went there. Yay to finally tasting it before our flight home!

Long queue. We loved it so much that we wanted to pack some of it home!

And what's a trip to Penang without trying the peranakan kuehs? We stumbled upon Mong Deng Pheow factory that is just beside Wai Kee.

We were strongly recommended to try the nine-layer cakes and coconut kuehs (MYR20 / pax), and it sure didn't disappoint.

Good til every last bite! And obviously, we couldn't resist buying more to bring home.

One thing that I love about Penang is that there are surprise finds at every corner - discovering a new mural or tasting a different type of street food. All these make up the unique experience of Penang.

If I am craving for awesome hawker food, Penang is definitely top of mind!

xx
